| Synopsis: Battlestar Galactica is a "new" remake from the late 1970's original series. The Battlestar Galactica, named for a space ship, avoids the nuclear holocaust on Caprica. The story takes place on space ships with alternating scenes on Caprica, other planets and space stations.
The survivors have re-formed their original society politically and militarily. Issues endure, which afflict all peoples: religious interpretation and freedom, love, sex, drugs, prostitution, murder, rebellion, and the desire for peace and dialogue with an unyielding, indifferent enemy. The enemy are Cylon, deadly intelligent robots, disparaged as "toasters".
There's a minor storyline with Billy Keikeya (Paul Campbell), aide to unelected President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell). She was Secretary of Education before disaster struck. Roslin is a such a steely moral woman it's hard to root for her: It's one thing to do what's right, it's another to believe that her way is the only way. Great attitude for a dictatorship, wrong for a democracy.
Billy has the hots for Anastasia "Dee" Dualla (Kandyse McClure). She serves on the Battlestar Galactica. Dee's feeling for Billy swing between tepid interest and mild indifference.
Billy declares his love for Dee, albeit a wee bit late. Perhaps he lacked the right "equipment".
Out of left field (at least to me), Dee has a hot and sweaty "relationship" with Lee "Apollo" Adoma (Jamie Bamber). I watched this on iTunes, and re-watched the events leading up to the attraction.
There's nothing there. It just starts. This has to be the first show I've watched in years where I can't predict who'll be killed off next. There are no sacred cows here. Dee rejects Billy for not being a soldier! Can't blame her, men in uniform are sexy. Plus Lee was going through his "Die Hard", "007" and Jack Bauer phase. He was in the midst of danger and action: catching bullets, beatings and a near death experience or two.
It was enough to kindle a girl's affection.
Still Billy was man enough and willing to die for the woman he loved. I just couldn't help wondering: did he die a virgin? Season 2 is avaiable for download in iTunes. |
